7-Jun-98

The biggest news is that Cath and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary this Saturday (the 6th, the anniversary of D-Day - the easiest way I remember it!). Our first in the US. Hopefully there will be many more. A quiet day was had, and we celebrated with a takeout meal from the local Thai restaurant. Hoo boy, almost blew our heads off! Brilliant!

The other bigg news this week is that through a fellow parishioner, and a friend of his, I've found somewhere playing soccer. On Saturdays there's an open game, first come get a place. So, before 8am I was there, and sure enough I got a game. There were about 20 guys in all, a good natured game, with mostly guys around 30-40 years old. Brilliant! A fun way to start a Saturday, although I'm paying for it today, calf muscles especially. It'll get easier as I get fitter again.

The USS Missouri photos are now available, and are not too bad. I'd love to have a chance to get some more from other parts, especially below decks. I've only put up a small selection of the photos I took. If you want to see them all, check the Iowa page on Guy Derdall's site.

Still on that subject (just!), I'm peeling nicely from the sun I got standing in line for 3 hours. Getting my hair cut short on the Saturday was not a good move. Still, it gives Cath endless hours of fun...

Another success this week is that Cath went into the Lady Di shop in Lake Oswego this week. They have all sorts of British goodies, including Heinz Salad Cream, Branston Pickle, HP Sauce and Drumsticks! Needless to say they're all exceedingly overpriced.

We also, finally, got a chance to view Chris Irwin's house. (She's our dentist, and seems to be pretty good. If you need a dentist in downtown Portland, give her a call and mention my name - 223 4294). Quite nice inside, 3 bedrooms, living room, attached dining room and an eating area at the end of the kitchen. The living room is at a lower level than the rest of the rooms to add a touch of variation. More importantly it has room outside for the kids to play, and it's just a few minutes from the school, which has a play area and soccer field. Would suit our needs real fine. All we have to do is wait until Chris finds a house to move into, which could be most of the summer.

Out in the big world there has still been much commentary over the situation in India and Pakistan with them testing nuclear weapons. If ever there was something that was better uninvented..

I don't get much of the news these days. Imus in the morning is not really a news program and the news breaks are very short and cover each story in about 5 seconds. Oh, for a BBC Radio 4 Today program!
