31-May-98

Monday was the Memorial Day holiday here, and we managed to drag the kids away from in front of the screens and get out and about. We headed up the Columbia river as far as Hood River, crossed over to Washington state and came back that way. (The fact that the I84 heading back west was absolutely solid helped our decision...) We stopped off at Multnomah Falls and took some pics which are on the Oregon page.

The other big thing was on Sunday we drove up to Astoria to see the battleship USS Missouri. It's on its way to Hawaii (under tow) to begin life as a floating museum, having spent the last couple of years sitting in Puget Sound (Washington state) doing nothing. Having never even seen a battleship before, let alone actually be on one, I got a big buzz out of it. I'm not sure about Cath and the kids, though!

The main problem was that a lot of other people had the same idea, and there was a 3 hour wait to get on board. Of course it would be a really bright, sunny day and I got a fair bit of sunburn. Worth it though. You can see our pictures on the 'Mighty Mo' page, and if you want more info and historic pics of it and its sister ships check out Guy Derdall's Weapons & Warfare on the web (WWW).

We're all just winding up for the World Cup that starts in just over a week. I'm planning to take the 10th off in order to watch Scotland play Brazil in the opening game, and then the Norway vs Morocco. The games are 0830 and 1200 local, so it seemed hardly worth going to work. Actualy it fits in nice, as I've planned my six monthly review and CPI Oracle User Group meeting for the same day. Saves trying to batter up the road from Salem at the end of the day.

Talking soccer, good to see that Glenn Hoddle, the England coach, has bitten the bullet has not selected Gascoigne for his World Cup squad. It was about time that he was brought down to earth and made to realize that his was not an automatic selection. There have been reports in the press that he may just quit soccer all together, which would not surpise me at all. However, if he got back into some serious training, kicked out all the rotten 'friends' (yes, Chris Evans, I'm talking about you!) and stopped being a spoilt brat he could yet again grace the soccer world with his undoubted talent. He's only 31, still fairly young, and could yet see another World Cup tournament.

Still on the soccer front, if you're into soccer banter, discussion and a bit of mud slinging, chck out the CNN/Sports Illustrated web-site. It has a rather interesting message board.

Big in the news at the moment is this new drug Viagra. Initially developed as an anti-impotency drug, it's being bought up by everyone to improve their, err, performance. It's reckoned, at the rate it's being bought, that it will be the best selling drug of all time, and then some. It's certainly giving Imus in the morning plenty of mileage, especially now that the Bubba Clinton sex scandals seem to be fizzling out.

Viagra has also supplied its first court case. One woman got it for her hubby, and it was so effective he's run off with a younger woman!
